Mr. Mikes has been around District 54 a long time and has witnessed a lot of American history. He was conceived during the Truman administration and born during the Eisenhower administration. He grew up in Bloomingdale, Illinois with his eight brothers and sisters during the Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson administrations. During the Nixon administration prior to Watergate, he graduated from Lake Park High School in Roselle, Illinois. Four years later, in the midst of the Ford administration, Mr. Mikes graduated from Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin. He began teaching 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies in District 54 during the Carter administration. During the Reagan administration he earned a master's degree in education from Northern Illinois University. His tenure in District 54 has included stops at Addams, Mead, and Eisenhower Junior Highs before coming to Keller during the Clinton administration. Mr. Mikes also taught 6th Grade at Lakeview Elementary for two years during the first Bush administration. After his retirement from District 54, Mr. Mikes plans to work for the federal government during the Mikes administration.

Current Unit: Chapter 24
World War I: 1914-1920

Chapter 24 describes the underlying causes of World War I, the outbreak of war in Europe, and the issues that led the United States to intervene on the side of the Allies. It also discusses the effects of the war on the home front and the long-term results of the war.

book coverMr. Mikes has also coached boys and girls basketball in the district and has authored a book on mental training for basketball entitled Basketball FundaMENTALs. The book has sold 20,000 copies and has been translated into German and Japanese.
